#iTunesSounds: Youngboy Never Broke Again – Until Death Calls My Name – March 17, 2018

Youngboy Never Broke Again appears to have next up on the rap scene. His song “No Smoke” has seen airplay nationally and he’s looking to follow that one with previously released tracks “Outside Today” and “Solar Eclipse.”

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

The gem of the album slated to release next month might be the brand new track “Right or Wrong” featuring Future. Youngboy talks about dealing with the gambles that have had him in trouble with the law over the past couple of years and his sons amongst other topics. Meanwhile, Future gets back to his early 2017 flow that produced two No. 1 albums.

#PSBSportsChop: Everyone Is Going Through Something – March 7, 2018

Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Kevin Love is the latest NBA superstar to step up to the plate and address the weight of mental health…

READ THE EXCERPT BELOW:

On November 5th, right after halftime against the Hawks, I had a panic attack.

It came out of nowhere. I’d never had one before. I didn’t even know if they were real. But it was real — as real as a broken hand or a sprained ankle. Since that day, almost everything about the way I think about my mental health has changed.

I’ve never been comfortable sharing much about myself. I turned 29 in September and for pretty much 29 years of my life I have been protective about anything and everything in my inner life. I was comfortable talking about basketball — but that came natural. It was much harder to share personal stuff, and looking back now I know I could have really benefited from having someone to talk to over the years. But I didn’t share — not to my family, not to my best friends, not in public. Today, I’ve realized I need to change that. I want to share some of my thoughts about my panic attack and what’s happened since. If you’re suffering silently like I was, then you know how it can feel like nobody really gets it. Partly, I want to do it for me, but mostly, I want to do it because people don’t talk about mental health enough. And men and boys are probably the farthest behind.

#PSBSportsChop: What Happened to Isaiah Thomas? – February 8, 2018

Last year, Isaiah Thomas averaged 29.8 points per game en route to leading Boston to the best record in the Eastern Conference. Fast forward nine months and Thomas has struggled to make his new home in Cleveland a good fit. A lingering hip injury, dip in field goal percentage after his return and recent comments about the Cavs coaching staff all resulted in the seven-year veteran being sent to Los Angeles in a trade with the primary guard swapped is Jordan Clarkson.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

How bad has Thomas value plummeted in the past six months? Clarkson is actually averaging less points per game this year than Thomas is even after missing all but 15 games so far. Longtime Laker fans Norris Grant and Sean “Sticks” Smith were upset in a group message I’m in about the Thomas addition to the roster after the trade broke earlier this afternoon. For an impending free agent, Thomas is in arguably the most unique situation in league history for a guy coming off of the season he had in 2016-17. Once again, Boston GM Danny Ainge is sitting behind his desk as a winner with Kyrie Irving wearing Celtic green and Thomas being traded yet again.

#PSBAllAccess: Discovery HS – Business Marketing Speech – February 7, 2018

Travis McDaniel invited me out to Discovery HS to speak to the Business Academy students. My message was simple: Find your passion and make it your livelihood. I told them I’m a kid from Gwinnett County Public Schools just like them…if I can make it from here, then they can be better than me.

THE BREAKDOWN:

We touched on multiple topics ranging from the worldwide success of local artists Migos to how to turn your passion into a nichè business. The students involved were fantastic with plenty of responses and feedback.

#PSBSportsChop: Is Tom Brady the GOAT? – February 7, 2018

It’s safe to say that NFL megastar Tom Brady has established himself as arguably the game’s greatest quarterback. There’s room to argue about his career against a legend like Joe Montana.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

As far as current NFL quarterbacks go, Brady is in a company all by himself. He’s 40 years old and still performing at a level good enough to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player on an annual basis. Despite a loss in this year’s Super Bowl, Brady finished with 505 yards passing in the game breaking the all-time Super Bowl record. He’s best known for his day-to-day training routine and meticulous nature preparing for opponents.

Take a look at the trailer for his upcoming documentary, Tom Vs. Time:

#iTunesSounds: “Family Feud” – Drake & Lil’ Wayne – Jan. 1, 2018

As if it were 2008 all over again, Drake jumped on an unreleased track from Wayne’s latest installment in the Dedication series. The “Family Feud” beat came from Jay-Z’s 4:44 album in 2017 and the release from Drake was timed perfectly after HOV dropped the video release on Friday.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

You can tell from some of the content that this verse is fresh out of the packaging and starts the year off right after a relatively slow musical year for arguably the best rapper in the game not named Jay himself.

Favorite Quotes from Drake in this one:

“Super Bowl goals. I’m at the crib with Puff (Sean Combs) and he got Kaepernick on the phone. He’s in a whole different mode.” — direct wordplay on how Jay starts his version mixed with Combs recent declaration that he wants to buy the NFL’s Carolina Panthers

“Tell me if TD Bank is approving loans. I’m thinking of paying Wayne what Universal owes. He spent a whole career going Platinum and Gold. He should own half the label. This is outta control.” — reference to the longstanding battle between Wayne and Cash Money founder Birdman on money owed to Wayne over the course of his career

“Somebody get Larry Jackson on the phone. I need some ownership if we pressing go. Business is boomin’ on behalf of me. I need a bite out of the Apple like Adam and Eve.” — Jackson is the streaming head of content for Apple Music. Drake has a deal with the service to the tune of 20 million but sounds like a renegotiation is in the works.

“…or too long like a sentence from a Philly judge. What’s the point in all the beefing when we really blood?!?” — sounds like a Meek Mill / Drake reunion could be on deck if Meek can ever get out of jail. #FreeMeek

“This pudding taste like the proof. If I ever see Trump, he better salute.”

#PSBSportsChop: “Corner Office” – Rich Paul – Dec. 29, 2017

I’ve been following Rich Paul‘s story since reading an article on ESPN in 2012. Paul is best known these days as LeBron James agent. Back then he was still creating waves with that announcement as very few players in league history have been in a position to empower those around them business wise the way that James has.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

To Paul’s credit, he’s taken full advantage most notably inking a deal with Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons two years ago. With the James assist, Paul is one of the NBA’s most powerful off-court players and appears to be positioned that way for years to come. One of James investment partners, Beats, did a feature on Paul this week that I enjoyed reading.

#iTunesSounds: K. Michelle – “Crazy Like You” – Dec. 15, 2017

K. Michelle just dropped her latest album “Kimberly: The People I Used to Know.” last week. She is one of the go-to artists in the RnB game love the past five years and the diversity in this album shows why. “Crazy Like You” is her latest single off the album.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

Since stepping into the game, K. Michelle has shown herself to be an immensely talented artist. This is one of my favorite tracks to date. She sings and even raps fluidly to get her point across here.

#PSBPopCulture: Jay-Z and Dean Baquet, In Conversation – Nov. 30, 2017

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

There is a part at the 23-minute mark where Jay talks about rap being a young man’s game and living in the white hot space while you sit at the top. The choices you make while you’re in the hot seat determine how the game will view you forever after you depart.

#iTunesSounds: Brent Faiyaz – “Sonder Son” – Nov. 20, 2017

Brent Faiyaz is a 22-year-old singer whose rise to the mainstream of RnB is directly tied to his performance singing the hook on the smash single “Crew” with Goldlink and Shy Glizzy. The song has been a mainstay on charts nationwide since the summer. Faiyaz has been recording with a 3-man group called “Sonder” thus the name of his solo project. The collective success of his music the past 18 months has propelled Faiyaz into a place where he was finally able to release his debut solo album “Sonder Son.”

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCultureBC

THE BREAKDOWN:

The Baltimore, Maryland native is definitely one to keep an eye on. His sound reminds me of Donell Jones in his early years. My favorite three songs off of Sonder Son are:

Track 6: Stay Down
Track 8: Talk 2 U
Track 10: So Far Gone / Fast Life Bluez
