#iTunesSounds: “Chixtape 4” – Tory Lanez – Jan. 17, 2017

Tory Lanez jumped out to a huge 2015 with the smash “Say It.” Since then, Lanez has been featured on multiple hit singles and dropped both an album as well as multiple mixtapes. This latest output, Chixtape 4, is filled with remixed samples of classic RnB hits. The emerging artist of the “New Toronto” continues to serve his faithful with that hot fire adding to his portfolio of music by the day.

The Breakdown

The assist for this one goes to longtime Tory supporter, Keil Moore. I’m with him on this one. Young Lanez is definitely in his bag. Take a listen below:

#iTunesSounds: “Push It On Me” – Trey Songz – Dec. 3, 2016

Kevin Hart‘s voice on a local radio station caught me completely off guard during a road trip last month. I had not heard his mixtape before hearing this song. Less than a minute in, it was obvious that Hart had a hit on his hands thanks in large part to RnB superstar Trey Songz. Songz lends his vocals to the track and in the process helped Hart deliver a winter hit. The song is now charting on SiriusXM but with Songz part only playing. The two shot a video for “Push It On Me” that has over 4 million YouTube views to date.

The Breakdown

Industry insider, Donte’ Grant, says that Songz made the right play to get the song on XM with his part as the main feature. For a guy who hasn’t seen his tremendous fanbase register into mega album sales, this song should give Trey a wave going into 2017. He’s also got a new holiday track out called, “Comin’ Home.”

Listen to the song with Kevin Hart’s part included:

#iTunesSounds: “Frustrated” – R.Lum.R – Nov. 16, 2016

r-lum_-r-frustrated

A newcomer to the RnB scene, R.Lum.R‘s “Frustrated” has the makings of a song to build a name off of. The smooth track coupled with his vocals always has the song getting airplay on Sirius XM’s The Heat channel.

#iTunesSounds: “Oh Wonder” – Oh Wonder – Nov. 7, 2016

Oh Wonder released their debut self-titled album after dropping a song a month from their in-home studio in London, England that they compiled into a full body of work.

The Breakdown

I’m ashamed to say this album slipped right by me. I listened to their single, “All We Do” on XM a while back but didn’t even think to listen to the rest of the album. Rookie move on my part. In the past ten days, I’ve played it front to back 20+ times. For the record, I blame both Anna Grace Smathers and Rob Hicks for not giving me the drop months ago. That said, it’s always nice to find a complete album like this late and feel like you finally joined the rest of the music world.

#iTunesSounds: “Two Birds, One Stone” – Drake – Oct. 31, 2016

Drake released four new songs in honor of his birthday last weekend. He’s slated to release a project in December titled, “More Life.” Though it isn’t going to be an album, this early marketing campaign let’s me know it will be sold via the iTunes Store and streamed on Apple Music like one.

In “Two Birds, One Stone,” Drake took three minutes to address some of the recent shots from Kid Cudi and Pusha T. Here are my favorite lines from the song:

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

The Breakdown

“I put it all in the music cause if I don’t say it here then I won’t say nothin. Can feel my hand gettin’ tired from all of the grudges.”

“Two Birds, One Stone my aim is amazin’. I need to start losing my ish on your people that’s hatin’.”

“Free C5, how the heck we got the boss waiting.” — reference to Lil’ Wayne’s ongoing dispute with Birdman about money he’s owed. The dispute is holding up the release of The Carter V.

“Stay in school. 2 percent of us rich and the rest they all milk it.”

Drake’s Response to Pusha T’s H.G.T.V.

“I never said it if I didn’t live it. Still they try to tell you I’m not the realist. Like I’m some privileged kid that never sat through a prison visit or like it was just handed to me tied with a ribbon. I never worked to get it.”

“But really it’s you with all the drug dealer stories that’s gotta stop though. You made a couple chops and now you think you Chapo.” — Down to his rap name, King Push there’s a 15-year story on Pusha T selling drugs in his past life

“You middle man in this ish, you never went live. You’ll be trying to sell that story for the rest of your lives.”

Drake’s Response to Cudi’s Outburst

“I loved your old stuff, wasn’t a fan of your latest. My numbers out of this world no wonder I feel so alienated. You were the man on the moon now you just go through your phases life of the angry and famous.” — Cudi’s debut album was titled “Man on the Moon”

“You stay Xanned and Perced up so when reality sets in, you don’t gotta face it.” — Cudi checked himself into rehab days after talking about Drake

“Look what happens soon as you talk to me crazy. Is you crazy???” — (see above) ouch Drake

#iTunesSounds: “The Letter O” – DAME D.O.L.L.A. – Oct. 24, 2016

Damian Lillard is best known for his outstanding play on the hardwoods of NBA arenas nationwide. The NBA All-Star also wants to be known for his ability in the rap booth as well. With his debut album, “The Letter O” it’s safe to say he’s done just that. From features with Lil’ Wayne to Juvenile, Dame has a star studded cast of guests for an artist dropping a debut album with very little advance marketing.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

The Breakdown

From the opening track, “Bill Walton,” it’s evident that Dame spent the money needed to deliver a potential No. 1 album. He’s been floating just behind 15-year veteran Joe Budden all week in the Hip-Hop/Rap section of the iTunes charts. The music is good. He told his story effectively and with clean lyrics.

#iTunesSounds: “A Seat at the Table” – Solange Knowles – Oct. 11, 2016

Before “A Seat at the Table,” Solange Knowles is probably best known for the incident in the elevator with her sister, Beyonce and B’s husband Jay-Z. On this album, Solange enlisted the help of some of the game’s most popular names for this output including Lil Wayne, The-Dream and BJ the Chicago Kid amongst others. As of today, Knowles will also be known for having a No. 1 album as “A Seat at the Table” has risen to the top of the Billboard charts.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

The Breakdown

I like how Solange has an interlude with someone telling a story of their struggle after almost every track. That said, I made a second playlist without those to appreciate the music transitions. I’d recommend having that as well. As far as the music goes, she brought the heat with her production and delivered with the content as well.

Note: Thanks to both Shereka Wright and Jordan Davis who posted / sent messages about the album as I forgot to get it when it dropped.

#iTunesSounds: “i hate u, i love u” – gnash – Oct. 3, 2016

gnash has jumped on the scene with an EP titled “us” released back in the spring of 2016. “i hate u, i love u” is the lead single and has climbed into the Top 20 nationally on major airplay charts. The lyrics is this one are heavy as he and Olivia O’Brien carry the track. The music video has over 125 million views on YouTube.

The Breakdown

I was listening to SiriusXM on the way to the airport recently and heard this song. I can’t believe it slipped by me but glad I finally caught it. The whole EP output is solid. Seven tracks, short and to the point. No fluff. gnash is on tour in Atlanta on Wednesday night at Center Stage. I won’t be able to make it but will definitely keep an eye out for the album.

#iTunesSounds: “Wishing” (Remix) – DJ Drama – Oct. 3, 2016

DJ Drama has a hit on his hands with “Wishing.” Chris Brown headlines the original version which is charting as high as No. 1 in some major radio markets.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

Not one to rest on his laurels, Drama teamed up with Fabolous, Trey Songz, Jhene Aiko and Tory Lanez for a star studded remix. Fab teased his fanbase with a drop on the recent “Summertime Shootout 2” mixtape but didn’t include his verse. After a two-week wait, the verse is live.

With the diverse lineup of artists, the remix has something for everyone. Take a listen here:

#iTunesSounds: Meek Mill vs The Game – Sept. 21, 2016

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

Hip-Hop artist, The Game went at both Sean Kingston and Meek Mill this weekend for bringing up name up to the authorities after Kingston ran into some issues…

Honestly, I’m not exactly sure how Meek got involved in this. But unfortunately, he did. Headlined by a loss in a battle to Drake, it’s been a well-documented rough 12 months for a rapper who had the Billboard Album of the Year in 2015.

After dropping “92 Bars,” Game didn’t hold any punches on “Pest Control” either. He’s currently on tour preparing for the release of his album, 1992. Game’s Atlanta tour stop was cancelled last Friday night. There was no word on if it was ticket sale (or lack thereof) related.

Game has long been one of hip-hop’s wittiest wordplay artists. He’s also a social media bully and is giving Meek the full treatment on his Instagram account.

In my opinion, Meek just took another loss.

Take a listen and judge for yourself.

Game: 92 Bars

Game opened fire at Meek with a solid diss track. In hindsight, Game one upped Meek with this one seemingly setting him up for the reply track, “Pest Control” (listen below).

Meek: Ooouuu (Remix)

Meek jumps on one of the nation’s hottest beats right now and calls Game a multitude of things. Mainly the Philly-based rapper calls him out for being a male stripper and says that Game will “only sell like 15,000 the first week.” Omelly and Beanie Sigel join him with verses as well.

Game: Pest Control

Game comes back on the same beat with five minutes worth of bars for everyone mentioned above. I was floored when I listened to it. Game brought the heat labeling Meek as Nick Minaj’s sideshow then leveled both Omelly and Sigel after. Meek’s got a tough road ahead to match or beat this one.
