#PSBPopCulture: “10 Questions” feat. Law G. of Goodlife – January 16, 2016

“10 Questions” is designed to give our readers an in-depth, behind the scenes look at the hottest names in the streets. From fashion to music to sports, these are the people you need to know and the stories behind where they are right now.

Law G. released his 13-track “Came A Long Way” mixtape in December 2015. Here are 10 takeaways from our hour-long sitdown with the emerging Atlanta-based rap artist.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

1) CLAY: What was the coolest non-music moment of 2015 for you?

LAW: My man Jah from AEBL Hoops gave me the chance to hoop in the celebrity all star game at Grady. Migos and Skippa Da Flippa were in it. I had a good time connecting with Quavo too.

2) CLAY: We’re here to tell your story, connect new people to you. What else do you do when you aren’t in the booth?

LAW: As you can tell, I love hooping like a lot. I feel like every hooper wanna be a rapper. Same with everybody wanna be a street ni**a. I love video games too for real. Man Clay, that Fight Night, they need to bring that back. You know we love that NBA2K16 and that Madden16…yo, the graphics on that thing too real.”

3) CLAY: You know I’m a video game junkie at heart. I dig that. Tell the people where you’re from.

LAW: I’m originally from Cameroon in Central Africa. I moved here to Atlanta and went to Meadowcreek High then I finished out at South Gwinnett.

4) CLAY: Tell us about South Gwinnett. You walked the halls when Mr. 6th Man, Louis Williams aka “Lou Will” was there. How was that vibe?

LAW: It’s crazy cause to this day, we’re all still fam. I mean look at my Goodlife crew with Nette (Executive Producer) and Delano Jr. (Advisor) not to mention the big homie Delano Sr. (Goodlife CEO). We all South Gwinnett family. My boy Ant Jukes, all them. The basketball games were crazy back then. Everyone out to see Lou and Merc (Mike Mercer). Kenny still working with Lou. That’s like his right hand man. Everybody’s in it to see the other person succeed too. We’re a family, everybody pushing each other because we all trying to win. We all trying make it. It’s a family thing.

5) CLAY: How does Lou’s NBA success influence your hunger in the music game?

LAW: Like I told all them, if we took over the rap game plus Lou’s movement with LouWillVille, it would be over. True story, the Drake and Big Sean’s, we comin at the top spot just like ALL them boys have.

A photo posted by Lou Williams (@louwillville) on

6) CLAY: Speaking of Big Sean, he’s one of my favorite artists. I know you rock with his music. What you been listening to of his lately?

LAW: I like that track “Back Up” he did with Dej Loaf. Buddy snapped on that! He killed that and the Blessings track too. Looking back at the Finally Famous mixtapes, Big Sean was one of them boys who knew he had to make it because he can rap, I respect that.

7) CLAY: Who else has you pushing the envelope musically right now?

LAW: Eminem is in a different phase of his career but still that’s my favorite growing up. He broke the mold. MGK, Mac Miller, even Macklemore, you gotta say that Em paved the way for them boys. Another one is J. Cole. I love his story. Who stays dedicated enough to eventually get signed by the same person (Jay-Z) who didn’t even wanna sign him in the first place?

8) CLAY: I remember Em’s Slim Shady dropping in ’97. Standing outside of North Gwinnett with the boy Jermale Wilkerson and being amazed that this white guy can really rap. On Cole’s Sideline Story, that “Mr. Nice Watch” collab with Jay was crazy. What do you have that can give the people hearing you for the first time that feeling?

LAW: On my tape, like I’m trying to come at the NICE tapes. We got our songs Ghost and Bond Money bumpin’ in the strip clubs. It’s so so dope man. So much love when we in there. I performed Ghost at the and PeeWee Longway and Jeezy was in there. I saw em nod they heads in acknowledgement to the movement. I try not to waste no time, like I have to go get it, like I’m responsible for people back home in Cameroon, so I can’t play around with this music.

9) CLAY: When did you really take the rap game seriously? There’s a moment for all of us in our lane that we realize, this can actually happen. Give us that moment for you.

LAW: Even back to South Gwinnett days, I used to love rap. But I wasn’t serious about it as far as being an artist. It’s hard to focus and deliver the picture to the fans of how you see life. Gotta drop it in a way they can relate, ya know? I was tust freestyling in cars after school before the game back then. It was probably 2008 area when it hit me. I’m ready for the game man, like its a lot of real dudes in the game. I’m not trying to be one of those super cool artists in the game, that’s not me. I’m giving the people me, what these streets made me.

CLAY: This doesn’t count as a question but I wanna know. I gotta get your take on Meek and Drake. Meek had the hottest output of his career then the Drake beef starts…

LAW: My man Meek Mill, I don’t know who he got in his circle. The Goodlife family wouldn’t let me do that. We gotta focus on our own music, day-to-day grind. That’s why I came a long way and why I’m gonna go a long way. My circle got my back. Meek was doing it, like he was popping. I would have to tell him to sit down and focus on the music. We winning.

10) CLAY: Say Less. Who you working with in the studio and what’s next for the Goodlife movement?

LAW: Big up to the boy T Black the Hitmaker. That fella’s a problem on the boards. I talked to Zaytoven and we talkin’ about possibly on crafting up an EP. We really gonna flood the streets. Hold on Clay…

“WHAT YOU GOT A STYLIST BRUH”

CLAY: What you talking about???

LAW: You got the Embellish jeans with the Yeezy’s on. You must have a stylist.

CLAY: Nah man. What’s that Kanye line from Champion: “I don’t see why I need a stylist When I shop so much I can speak Italian.” Haha. Really though, shoutout Taylor Johnson for helping create the style though this outfit I put together solo. Serious business, tell the people what’s next for Law G.

LAW: I have so much to say. Came A Long Way is without a question the start of the movement. Now we gotta cultivate the buzz, the love. Ghost is playing on V103 now. The reason I feel like a lot of blessings are gonna come is because I just pray man. I just know I got a long way but I’m just cool with it. My confidence is on 100, but I know, I ain’t there yet until like I got the fans buzzing monthly when I drop a track and I really start eating off my work. Like I know the moment one track catches, I gotta have a lot more to follow, like Trinidad James with All Gold Everything he got on quick. The second and third singles are critical so know that’s what I’m consumed with. Having those ready to jump off after Ghost catches fire.

#iTunesSounds: “Hot or Not” – G-Eazy & Kid Cudi –January 11, 2016

By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

“When It’s Dark Out” by G-Eazy

After coming off an amazing debut album, “These Things Happen” released in 2014, G-Eazy had a lot of expectations as to what he was going to put out next. With several radio hits such as “I mean it”, “Lotta That”, and “Downtown Love”, it was hard for audiences across the nation to imagine this Oakland, California native topping it. This year G-Eazy brought us yet another quality tracklist in his album “When It’s Dark Out”.

At first I was skeptical as of G-Eazy’s ability to provide more heat so close behind his last great album. Then I got text in between classes from my boy Brett Byerly (@Bbyerly46) saying it was a must cop. After getting in my room and letting it play while I studied for finals I realized… he was right. The album includes big name features such as Chris Brown, Big Sean, Kehlani, to smaller upcoming artist such as Starrah and Quiñ.

My personal favorites are “Order More” featuring Starrah and “Everything Will Be Okay” featuring Kehlani. I would be surprised if one or both hit the radio soon. This album is a solid purchase for any G-Eazy fan or just someone looking to expand their hip-hop library.

“Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven” by Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi has been a favorite artist of mine since his first mixtape, “A Kid Named Cudi” to his “Man On The Moon” album from his GOOD Music days. However after going ghost for awhile, people across the world, including myself, were starting to wonder if we would ever get another “Day & Night” or “Pursuit of Happiness” type banger from Cudi. This year he finally dropped his second album under Wicked Awesome label umbrella after much anticipation from his core audiences. However, unlike his usual album work, this body of art from Cudi left me highly disappointed.

With guitar and drums consistently throughout the album, it sounded more like an album put together by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Although it may have reached a certain interested crowd in the world, there is no question that he has lost a lot of core fans. The album is a complete left turn from all his previous works in which it almost sounds as some sort of Indie Rock album. This was a tough realization that maybe the artist that brought us such amazing songs, will never return back to that level of glory.

#PSBSportsChop: Atlanta vs. Miami – December 15, 2015

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture and By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

ATLANTA – With the Miami Heat in town, it was a perfect time to check out the Atlanta Hawks live in action for the first time since Opening Night. PSBPopCulture.com Team members Jordan Davis and Taylor Johnson were on hand for the action. The crowd was filled with music stars including Atlanta-based acts Keri Hilson sitting two rows in front of us and 2 Chainz across the floor sitting so close he could trip a ball player.

On the hardwood, Kent Bazemore (Hawks) and Chris Bosh (Heat) led their teams statistically as the Heat led this one from the start. Expect to see both of these teams in the Eastern Conference Playoffs with a rematch possible along the way.

#PSBPopCulture: Staying Fit and Eating Healthy – December 9, 2015

By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

Between spending time trying to keep a decent GPA and 50 cent wing nights at the campus Wingstop, it’s (real) hard to keep a good diet and real easy to gain weight in college. Luckily, I have three close friends that are constantly keeping me on track and headed in the right direction. Both of my workout partners, Taylor Grant and Bo Danso, are majoring in exercise science so they lead our workouts every night with their knowledge of the body and muscle groups.

SIDENOTE: Follow them on social media – @YaboyTG and @edanso132

Taylor wants to own a physical therapy facility, while Bo wants to own a gym. Because of that, every night is like a free professional personal training session. I take a lot of their health and fitness ideas as well and try to incorporate them into my life. I dig the way Bo always keeps track of his protein and carbohydrate intake to make sure he’s getting enough and the way Taylor plans his meals 2-3 days in advance.

The third person who does a great job of keeping me on track, in a competitive way, is my PSBPopCulture.com editor Brandon Clay. Being around him and watching eat extremely healthy then hit the gym twice a day, gives me that extra motivation to not slip up. Even after long red eye flights and his busy schedule, he finds time to get it done. I think to myself, “Surely if the boy B. Clay can manage to find time to prepare his healthy meals and hit the gym then I have no excuse.”

CLAY’S TAKE: I appreciate that fella. Honestly, for me it’s become a lifestyle. It’s a numbers game in terms of calories in versus calories burned combined with the amount of fat in those calories and protein intake as well. With my travel schedule, I have to be very cautious of what I choose to fuel my body with on a daily basis. I wasn’t blessed with the genetics to eat whatever I want and still stay in optimum shape. I had to greatly reduce my sugar intake in 2013 to see gains. I love slushies, Swedish Fish and things of that nature so it was an adjustment. I’ve replaced those things with other products that I like including granola and sugar free Trident gum.

This fall, I’ve adjusted my cardio to make sure I’m in the gym on a daily basis. I tell people often that it’s a daily choice to be great in any area. I feel as if I’m competing against myself and Jordan amongst others to get better each day. Owning the fact that I want to be in shape has made me that more accountable for sticking to my goal of being in great shape. The PSBPopCulture.com Team gave me a hard time when I made the life adjustment to reduce the sugar a couple of years ago but that’s exactly the motivation I need to be successful. I function at a high level when people tell me I can’t get something done.

Here are some of my favorite music lines to motivate me:

“I see rappers in the gym trying to tone up.” – J. Cole, Winter Schemes

“Living out a suitcase but I’m feeling good, Johnny’s got me pushing two plates.” – Drake, 9 AM in Toronto

“6 pack under my tank top.” – T.I., Trap Back Jumpin

What is PSBPopCulture.com – December 8, 2015

The initial vision for the PSBPopCulture.com website was to provide our team a home to discuss everything that happens when we aren’t in the gym. Since the release of the site in October, we’ve received feedback from people of all walks of life. From Elbert Kinnebrew in California to Shane Laflin in Texas, we appreciate everyone who has taken time to read the content we work so hard to post. That type of response is exactly what we wanted. Whether it’s interviews with the future of (Atlanta) music, reviews of the TLC series series “Coach Charming” to our take on the University of Missouri situation, we’ve aimed to bring a diverse set of topics to the website and our social media account as well.

Our Team has been fantastic with emerging stars Stella Alverson and Jordan Davis leading the way with top shelf content during the Fourth Quarter of 2015. Veteran writer Jonathan Hemingway has been as clutch as Jay Cutler was on Thanksgiving Day. We’ve delivered 40 original pieced since the mid-October launch. We could not have done it without article assists from people like Donte Grant, Terah Moore and Carl Reed.

So what’s next for our team as 2015 turns into 2016? We have interviews lined up with up-and-coming music artists like Riley Bierdrer, live access to NBA games and even have Justin Bieber’s “Purpose Tour” in Atlanta on the calendar to cover. If you want us to tell your story, feel free to contact us via DM on Twitter to make it go down.

Here’s a look at some of the social content we’ve posted since the launch:

#iTunesSounds: Four To Know – December 1, 2015

“Four To Know” is a glimpse inside what’s current in the iTunes Music Libraries of our team members. We’ll provide four songs to grab and a breakdown of what appeals to us in each track.

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture

1) “Hello” by Erykah Badu feat. Andre 3000

BREAKDOWN: It’s always nice to hear from Miss Badu who was one of R&B’s go-to voices in the late ’90’s and early 2000’s. The fact that she brought Andre 3000 along for one of his few select verses that he drops annually was a pleasant surprise. The two team up over the classic Ronald Isley sample “Hello, It’s Me.” Andre delivers his seemingly timeless flow while Badu makes it feel like it’s 2000 all over again.

2) “No Shade” by Chaz French feat. Wale

BREAKDOWN: A relative newcomer to the mainstream scene, keep an eye on Chaz French. I owe an assist to PSBPopCulture.com Team Member, Jordan Davis, for this one. French comes through with a quality output on this one even singing the hook. Meanwhile his veteran counterpart, Wale, delivered a mean punch on the type of R&B type of track we’ve come to expect Mr. Folarin to body.

3) “Contradiction” by Mail Music feat. Jhene Aiko

BREAKDOWN: Mali Music has been on the scene for years but has started to breakout as a mainstream R&B solo artist since the release of “Beautiful.” I have to credit current Notre Dame freshman Ali Patberg for the lob on that track 18 months ago. Now Mali is back on the Spike Lee movie “Chi-Raq” soundtrack. He brought emerging female R&B artist Jhene Aiko along on this one and together the combine to knock this one out the park. The high pitch sound floating on top of the melody reminds me of the style Justin Bieber used on “Sorry” and adds to the sound of this one.

4) “Send My Love” (To Your New Lover) by Adele

BREAKDOWN: On a “25” CD loaded with soon-to-be Billboard chart toppers, this one stands out with it’s upbeat tempo as she does her 1-2 on the track. The feel in sequence and message makes me think of “Rumour Has It” off of Adele’s “21” output. Ironically, it’s the second track on the CD the same way Rumour Has It was.

#EntertainmentPSB: The Future of Atlanta Music – November 23, 2015

By: Brandon Clay @PSBPopCulture and By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

Atlanta is a city well known recently for pushing the pace forward in entertainment, fashion and music alike. With everyone trying to get into fashion, art, and music the level of competition throughout is at what some would say is an all time high.

In addition to industry success: followers, likes and retweets are coveted by even the most established in the fields above. Two Atlanta-based producers share more than early age success and a household, they share a direct family bond. Brothers (@DamiThaPrince) & (@SoundByAde) continue to show they belong in the conversation of who has next from the city that forever changed the hip-hop landscape with OutKast emergence in the late-90’s.

In just four years, they’ve gone from producing beats in their family’s living room in the hopes for the glory to working with some of the hottest young artists in lavish studios reserved for the industry leaders. To date, the brothers have worked with emerging artists such as Bryson Tiller, BJ The Chicago Kid and Montana of 300.

At the ripe old ages of 19 and 20, Dami and Ade are creating their own fast lane in a city where the H-O-V Lane is always the move. Based on their current path, they are well on their way to be two of the hottest producers out of Atlanta for years to come. With a production team that resembles 808 Mafia, they plan on becoming the go to name for artists looking for the next Billboard chart topper.

We sat down with Ade & Dami to see what motivates them through the long nights in the studio, how they manage college while chopping up the music their friends will soon party to and where they are headed from here.

Question: Who do you look up to for music inspiration?

Dami: Honestly, my brother. It’s a musical competition in their house.

Ade: I look up to Kanye West as a musical inspiration. I like his “My Twisted Dark Fantasy” CD the most.

Question: Who would you love to work with?

Dami: PartyNextDoor. He’s just dope right now.

Ade: Pusha T. His style is inline with the music that I’m making.

Question: What was your favorite song of the year?

Dami: “Just Another Interlude” by Bryson Tiller

Ade: “Momma” by Kendrick Lamar off of “To Pimp A Butterfly”

Question: Take on Drake and Meek Mill situation?

Dami: People just love Drake. It’s honestly real hard to get at Drake because of the position that he’s in.

Ade: Everyone’s just riding Drake. Meek is a still a good artist. The people are gonna be back on the Meek bandwagon when Dreamchasers 4 drops.

Jordan: There should have just been Meek on the track, no other voices / no features. Classic battle rap: one on one.

Brandon: Meek tried to do too much. Should have spit quick facts, touched on Drake’s relationship with Serena all over three beats – that throwback Funkmaster Flex style. Rewind the dope lines three or four times in a row.

Question: Name an artist on the come up?

Dami: I vibe with Pouya. He’s an artist from Florida who definitely got bars.

Ade: I’m rockin’ with Travi$ Scott right now. You can see the Kanye influence.

#EntertainmentPSB: Call of Duty “Black Ops 3” – November 16, 2015

By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

In college, the biggest thing that helps me get through the long and stressful semester is my (limited) free time. For some, it’s being on a sports team, but for me and my crew it’s a combination of working out and video games. My editor, Brandon Clay, thinks he’s stronger than me but I got him beat while still making time to play video games. Other than FIFA, NBA 2K, and Madden, one of our favorite video game franchises is the Call Of Duty series.

Last year, Call of Duty released “Advanced Warfare” but that one didn’t catch on with our crew. The extent of how futuristic the game was made it feel more like a Halo or Gears of War. Fast forward a year to the latest Call of Duty release of “Black Ops 3” was announced we knew what was going to be occupying our late nights. As expected, the graphics are superb and the realism of the gameplay can draw even non gamers to the screen. The moment you turn the game on the introduction page reads, “Forget a sick day, you’ll need a sick week.”

We are either all crammed into one apartment playing or playing together online. After we finish working out around 9:00 pm, my online group – Brett Byerly, Dante Sawyer and CJ James – will stay up until as late as 4:00 am (weekends only of course) glued to our flat screen. Without a doubt, Black Ops 3 is a game that I would recommend for any age and any game experience level.

#FreshStyleFits: Epitome ATL – November 4, 2015

By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

My friend, Evan Samuels, and I were in Buckhead a couple months ago when we stepped in Epitome for the first time. It’s located at 252 Pharr Road NE in Atlanta, Ga., a mile down the street from Lenox Mall. From the moment we walked in, we noticed the crisp displays and varieties of shoes the boutique carries. From wall to wall, there are shoes for sneaker heads of all backgrounds ranging from custom Nike Roshes to Vans and even old school Limited Edition Air Maxes. I knew immediately this was a heaven for both collectors and fans of nice kicks alike.

The staff is laid back and down to earth and give great service along with their ability to offer personal knowledge of every collection. My friend, Terah Moore, works there and says “the shoes there can’t be found at any other stores.” She told me, “I’m a sneaker girl so it’s awesome to work somewhere that has a very special selection that you can’t just find at the mall”. Epitome offers an abundance of unique shoes and should be checked out by my people riding through Buckhead. I knew anyone with a fresh shoe game like Brandon’s would like the boutique, so I had to drop the assist.

By: Brandon Clay @BBallPlusMusic

Epitome-Atlanta

I took the Chris Paul like assist from JD and slammed the alley-oop home like Blake Griffin making Epitome home for an hour on Tuesday evening. Like JD, I was immediately drawn to the crisp lines and white designs inside the store. Shoutout to both Terah and Justin Paul for all the help and providing the background of the store while I looked around. I’ve been focusing on tightening up my Jordan Collection the past 12 months but there was a Nike Backpack that caught my attention. The Nike MOG Bolt Bag on display was simply too saucy to let slide so I scooped and scored on my way out to the Daron Jones performance downtown. The staff also informed me that everything is available for purchase online at EpitomeATL.com as well. The store is definitely in the rotation when I visit Lenox and Phipps from here on out.

#iTunesSounds: Three to Know: Migos, Roy Woods and Travis Scott – October 24, 2015

“Three to Know” will give our readers a different look at some of the hottest albums/songs in the music game regardless of genre from our writers iTunes collections. This week, we take a look at three selections from Jordan Davis’ vantage point:

By: Jordan Davis @JDavisPSB

1) Travis Scott’s album “The Rodeo”

Travis Scott has been under the radar for quite sometime now until his debut album “The Rodeo” was released this year. Although having previous mixtapes and quite popular songs, it has been hard for this 23-year-old rapper to break out of the underground circuit and establish mainstream notoriety. Originally from Houston, Texas, Scott is looking to establish himself as the next big thing in the “H-Town” lineage of music artists. Scott added some quality features to this breakout album, including artists such as Future, 2 Chainz, Rae Sremmurd, and his personal favorite, Kanye West. This is an album that hip-hop fans should give a listen if they are looking for new sounds.

2) Migos on the rise?

This time two years ago, radio stations nationwide were playing “Versace” consistently. Since then, the Migos have been a well known household name for the new wave of rap fans. The Atlanta-based rap group has sold out shows from coast to coast and worked with the likes of Young Thug, Drake, Travis Scott, and Fall Out Boy in the process. After releasing their recent album Yung Rich Nation, the Migos are well on their way to becoming more than just a regionally popular rap group.

3) Roy Woods EP “EXIS”

Just a few years ago when Canadian artists were mentioned it immediately brought images of Drake, Justin Bieber, Beck, and The Weeknd. Recently, the powerful status that Drake holds has been able to shine light on talented upcoming artists such as Majid Jordan, PartyNextDoor, ILoveMakonnen, OB O’Brien, Amir Obe, and Roy Woods. Roy Woods being the latest of artist to come on the scene since his song “Drama” featuring the aforementioned Drake was played nationwide. Woods then dropped his EP called “EXIS” in which he displays his singing abilities and unique style. For the record, I’m a fan and even turned my editor, Brandon Clay, on to Woods’ style. There’s no question this is quality late night car ride music or when you’re in the mood to just vibe. It’s easy to see why OVO signed Woods who is bringing a new R&B style to the industry. In that way, Woods’ hopes to duplicate the success of The Weeknd and PartyNextDoor. I’ll keep you posted.
